Purpose Realized

Many people live their lives unfulfilled ;(

From professionals, to teachers, bankers, lawyers, leaders of organizations and countries, mothers, fathers and even young people – so many people don’t know their purpose for being here on planet earth.  Some people find their ‘raison d’etre’ (‘reason for being’ or purpose) early, while others struggle to make sense of it all.  Oftentimes, people ‘check out’ of life because the aimlessness of not being fully plugged in eats away at them so intensely that they fail to see why they should continue living.  Clearly this is a big deal for a lot of people, and lives literally hang in the balance for want of finding meaning in life.

Having worked with children, young people and adults over the years; I have found that we all want meaning for our lives no matter the age.  And in assessing the advice given to many by others, I’ve determined that much of that advice centers on what the persons should do … “you’ve got to find your purpose in life in order to be effective”, “live your best life now”  and “get your life together, do something of worth and meaning.”  Now the advice given is great but oftentimes it begs the question … “How?”  How do I find my purpose in life in order to be effective?  How do I live my best life now?  How do I embrace a purpose-filled life?  I am of the opinion that instruction is naked without the practical clothing of tools, systems and know-how.  After I observed this trend from other speakers and instructors, I felt it critical to offer any and everyone that I work with, practical tools by which to clothe the nakedness of what they hear.  For many this approach is foreign, because they are so used to operating their lives via the instruction of a “talking head” who offers no tangible road map for the conclusion of what he or she is saying.  And as a result, they are confused as to where they’re going and if their lives count for anything.  Therefore, based on my professional exposure to systems, measurements and analysis; I thought not only to be a dispenser of knowledge but also a provider of ways and means by which the lofty ideals and instructions I present, can be accessed by the practical day-to-day action of systems, measurements and assessments.  We all know that food is good and needed for nourishment and growth, however; that same food must be broken down through mastication in order to have its nutritious value delivered to the cells and systems of our bodies that so desperately need it.  So, the great swelling words and instructions are the ‘food for our lives’ in its natural state, but that awesome food needs a delivery system – and that delivery avenue comes in the form of practical systems that breakdown the instructions into daily, manageable actions which eventually lead to the desirable outcome captured in those words that were first spoken.

Several years ago I was working with a group of young people who were facing the same questions.  They asked about this whole issue of purpose and I scratched my head to find an answer for them.  Finally, I discovered a way by which this question could be answered. On the invitation from the school principal, I addressed them, in a one-day seminar; on the topic ‘Adopting Excellence as a Lifestyle’ & ‘Vision, Legacy & Leadership’.  I gave them an assignment which on completion enabled them to see the talent, value and potential hidden inside.  Oftentimes our children don’t see what rich potential they possess and so the 360 Degree Perspective Exercise was given to draw it out.  Additionally, from our 360 degree perspective findings, we were able to develop a L.I.F.E. Profile and a Short and Long-term Goal Summary for each child.  The L.I.F.E. Profile presented a snapshot of each of the participating children’s strengths, development areas, short and long term goals and a positive statement of how they see themselves in the future.

Based on that work with the young people and several others over the years; a few years later, I came up with this simple infographic to show people how they can discover their purpose … ‘Purpose Finder’.
